PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU’S DONATION OF $10,000.00 AT THE LAZ GALA DINNER
The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has noted with grave concern, the impression created by certain sections of the media and the public in general regarding the donation of the sum of US$10,000.00, which His Excellency the Republican President Mr. E.C. Lungu made at the LAZ Gala Dinner on 25th April 2015. In the same vein, some media houses have also created the impression that Lusaka Lawyer, Mr. Kelvin Bwalya pledged the sum of US$5,000.00 to LAZ at the same event.
LAZ wishes to inform the general public and all stakeholders that the correct position is that His Excellency the President, Mr. Edgar Lungu actually donated the US$10,000.00 to the University of Zambia, School of Law towards the hosting of the all Africa Human Rights Moot Court Competition, which UNZA Law school will be hosting in conjunction with the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria later this year. It is towards the same event that Mr. Bwalya and several other Lawyers in attendance at the Gala Dinner pledged donations.
Although LAZ is of the considered view that some publications on this matter are highly libelous of LAZ, LAZ has elected to issue this clarification as a way of resolving this matter amicably in order to maintain the smart partnership which LAZ enjoys with media houses, which partnership is aimed at enhancing media freedom and freedom of information in Zambia.
LAZ invites any members of the public, stakeholders or the press who may still have queries or concerns over this matter to contact the undersigned or the LAZ Secretariat.
