Policy Development For LAZ! Reminder
In our continued efforts to serve you better and to improve the organisation and running of the Association we are happy to advise that your Council has commenced work on policy development for the Association.
Kindly be advised therefore, that staff, interns (and possibly consultants) from the Secretariat will be contacting you and requesting you to either participate in a survey or in discussions on various subjects aimed at helping with the process.
Many thanks to the members that have already taken time to speak to us and to grant us appointments.
Sensitisation  Workshop For LAZ on Court Annexed Mediation
The Judiciary has decided to reintroduce mediation settlement weeks in order to help reduce the backlog on cases.
The first settlement week will be held during the vacation of August, 2015.
The Judiciary will therefore be holding a one-day sensitisation workshop for members of LAZ based in Lusaka and Kabwe on 13th July, 2015 in Lusaka at a venue to be advised. The objective of the workshop is to re-sensitise all stakeholders in the court annexed mediation process on the mediation process and rules.
Young members of the Association, members not yet exposed to mediation and members making many attendances before court are encouraged to attend.
Members interested in participating in this workshop are requested to register with the Secretariat by 16:00 hours on July 10th, 2015.

2016 Annual General Meeting And Law Conference
The 2016 LAZ Law Conference and Annual General Meeting are scheduled to be held from 14th to 16th, April, 2015 in Livingstone.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) Committee is therefore calling for proposed themes and topics for the law conference.
All proposals must reach the LAZ Secretariat by close of day on Friday 10th July, 2015 . You can deliver your proposals in person or by sending an email to mervis@laz.org.zm, timothy@laz.org.zm, hopec@laz.org.zm or hope4laz@gmail.com.

Rhodes Park School – Job Shadow Experience
Rhodes Park School will be conducting a job shadow exercise from 10th to 14th August, 2015 and has requested LAZ to participate in this exercise.
The purpose of this work experience exercise is to expose the students to the work place in an occupational area of their interest in order to help them make informed career choices.
Members/firms interested in assisting in this exercise are requested to express their interest by registering with the Secretariat by July 23rd, 2015.

Mary Queen of Peace –Career Talk For Pupils Aspiring to Become Lawyers/Judges
Mary Queen of Peace Girl’s School has invited the Association to participate in its career day to be held on Friday 17th July, 2015 at 10:00 hours. The Association has been requested to give a talk to pupils aged from 7-17 years who are aspiring to be lawyers or judges.
Members interested in assisting in this exercise are requested to express their interest by registering with the Secretariat by July 10th, 2015.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators will be celebrating its Centenary Year with a flagship Africa Region Centenary Conference in Livingstone, Zambia. Five of the Institute’s Branches will contribute to the agenda with speakers from Kenya, Nigeria, Mauritius, South Africa and Zambia. The programme will also offer a case study from Rwanda.
The Chairperson of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Zambia Branch, Judge William S. Mweemba delightfully extends an invite all members of the Law Association of Zambia to this Flagship CIArb Africa Region Centenary Conference taking place at the Falls Convention Centre, Zambezi Sun Hotel, Livingstone from 15-18 July, 2015.
The programme is split over two days and will include three keynote addresses by:
Key Note Speaker: Lady Justice Irene C. Mambilima, Chief Justice of the Republic of Zambia
Other Outstanding Speakers:
 Hon Mr Justice Ayotunde Phillips, Chief Judge of Lagos State, Nigeria; and
 Professor John Faris, Head of the Institute for Dispute Resolution in Africa.
The agenda will also offer seven interactive conference panel sessions discussing the following subjects:
1. What holistic approaches can the Africa region adopt to overcome the challenges and issues it faces with ADR?
2. How are disputes resolved by elders in Africa?
3. Meeting the challenges: CIArb in Africa
4. Infrastructure and natural resources: Managing the effect of joint ventures and how they impact local communities.
5. ADR practice, a case study from Rwanda
6. Commercial mediation
7. Learning from Africa, new frontiers in ADR
This flagship conference will also provide an opportunity for lawyers, legal practitioners, adjudicators, arbitrators, mediators and conciliators to come together, to network, build contacts, develop business and share knowledge with other international dispute resolvers. The programme will include a Welcome Reception and Conference Dinner, which will all be held at the Victoria Falls Convention Centre located within the Zambezi Sun Hotel.
We are all encouraged to attend and support this initiative.

The SADCLA 2015 AGM and Conference will be held from 20-23 August 2015 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

2) SADC Lawyers’ Association Individual Members who are up to date with their annual subscriptions- $300

From the 1st of August 2015 until the 14th of August 2015, late payment registration fee of $450 will apply accordingly and without regard to the registration fee categories.

Dates and Deadlines to Note:
Friday 17 July – Early registration fee deadline
Registration forms and payment must be received at the IBA office by Friday 17 July to qualify for the early registration fee. Early registration guarantees inclusion in the preliminary list of participants.
Friday 28 August – Deadline for inclusion in list of participants
To be included in the conference list of participants available at the conference, registration forms and payment must be received at the IBA office by Friday 28 August.
Friday 28 August – Social Function Payment and Confirmation
Full payment for reserved social function places must be received by Friday 28 August or the reserved places will be released and made available to other delegates without notice.
Wednesday 9 September – Deadline for online amendments/additions
All amendments and/or additions to conference registrations must be done online before Wednesday 9 September.
Wednesday 23 September – Registration Deadline
All registrations (online and by hard copy) must be received by close of business on Wednesday 23 September. After this date, conference registration will still be possible on-site at the higher on-site registration fee.
Wednesday 23 September – Social Booking Deadline
All social function bookings must be finalised by close of business on Wednesday 23 September. After this date, all amendments, returns and purchases of social function places will only be possible upon arrival at the conference.
