LAZ Press Statement on the Presidential Election Petition; Attacks on the Constitutional Court and the Attorney-General; the Failed Referendum; and the Suspension of Broadcasting Licenses for Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Itezhi-Tezhi Radio

  1. The Presidential Election Petition

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has received several requests from the press and concerned members of the public to state its position on the various legal issues raised in the presidential petition filed on 19th August 2016 by Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and Mr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba in the Constitutional Court against President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Ms. Inonge Mutukwa Wina and the Electoral Commission of Zambia and on the effect of the petition on the Executive Branch of Government. LAZ has also observed that there have been several opinions expressed by various members of society on the matter in the print and electronic media as well as on various social media platforms.

In view of the fact that the matter is in court, LAZ wishes to state that it is precluded from commenting on the substance of the matter in any manner that might appear to be interpreting or determining the issues in dispute, which is the preserve of the Constitutional Court.
