The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has noted several attacks and various attacks on the Association and its President, Linda Kasonde, following yesterday’s press briefing on the attacks against the Judiciary. LAZ would firstly like to reiterate that the President of LAZ speaks on behalf of the Council of LAZ which represents the membership of the Association. In speaking on this subject, LAZ was merely fulfilling its statutory mandate under Section 4 of the Law Association of Zambia which includes the following:
“(l) to seek the advancement of the rule of law and of the rights and liberties of the individual;
(n) to represent, protect and assist members of the legal profession in regard to their conditions of practice, remuneration and otherwise;
(o) to protect and assist the public in all matters touching, ancillary or incidental to the legal profession;
(p) to do all such other things as may be conducive to the attainment of the foregoing objects or any of them”.
Regarding the attacks on LAZ and its President, it is clear that they are baseless and lacking in substance. Aside from the media, the press briefing was attended by five Council members and two ordinary LAZ members as well as concerned citizens.
