Statutory Requirement to Practice
i) Name: Advocate
j) Admission: The requirements to practice are an LL.B from the University of Zambia, or other recognized law degrees from other universities, followed by a one-year practical training course at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education and successful completion of a bar examination by the Council the Zambia Institute of Legal Education. After admission to practice, an Advocate may appear before any court in Zambia except that an Advocate who has less than three years post- qualifying experience is not permitted to appear before the Supreme Court of Zambia.
PRACTICING CERTIFICATES FOR YEAR 2007
TAKE NOTE that all Legal Practitioners are required to submit their application for practicing certificates not later than 30 November 2006. Applications received after 30 November 2006 will attract a penalty fee of 20% of the subscription fee due. Applications received after 31 December 2006 shall not be processed. The following should be adhered to:
a. Declaration forms should be completed in full giving physical and postal address and telephone number of the firm or the advocates.
b. Payments should be made as follows:
Practitioner Standing and experience Annual Subscription
Less than 5 years K2,200,000.00
More than 5 years but less than 10 years K2,500,000.00
More than 10 years but less than 15 years K2,800,000.00
15 years and above K3,100,000.00
State Counsel K3,600,000.00
Associate Member K 300,000.00
c. Declaration Forms should be accompanied by payment.
d. Unless exempted, every application should be accompanied by an Accountant’s Certificate issued by a qualified Accountant in terms of the provision of the Legal Practitioners Act.
Applications should be submitted as follows:
1. For North Northern, Luapula, Northern and Copperbelt Provinces to the Honorary Secretary, Mr, Hillary Banda of Hillary Banda & Company, Tazama House, 1st Floor, Room 4, Moffat Road, P O Box 71468, Ndola.
2. The rest of the other provinces to the Honorary Secretary, Mr. Justin Chashi of Mweemba Chashi & Partners, Plot No. 9 Katopola Road, Rhodes Park, P O Box 30284, Lusaka.
Declaration Forms can be obtained from the Honorary Secretaries and from the Executive Secretary at the Law Association of Zambia Secretariat in Lusaka.
